Technological / internet based media

  Instructional media

There are a lot of definitions of media. Gagne (1970) as cited in Ruis,N....(2009: 2)  defines that media are various components in learners’ environment which support the learners learn. Briggs (1970) defines media are physical means which are used to send messages to the students and stimulate them to learn. A little beat differences from the opinions of the two experts, The National Education Association defines that media are the forms of communication either printed or audiovisual.

Scanlan states that instructional media encompasses all the materials and physical means an instructor and teacher might use to implement instruction and facilitate learners' achievement of instructional objectives. This may include traditional materials such as chalkboards, handouts, charts, slides, overheads, real objects, flash card and videotape or film, as well newer materials and methods such as computers, DVDs, CD-ROMs, the Internet, and interactive video conferencing.

The objective of this observation is to find out what kind of media that teacher used and how are the implementation in the classroom. The observer observed  class 2 A. The class started at 7.45-9.15. the topic for that  class was “past progressive”.

Teacher entered the class by saying salam. Before beginning the class all  students were recited qur’an. Then the teacher checked the attendant list. She also gave motivation and appreciation to the students. The student were listened to the teacher’s explanation about the competencies that will be achieved and their functions in daily life. After giving some examples the teacher asked the students to create their own examples by using their friends or the things around them as the media. The teacher also helped the students who did  not understand about the material given.

The teacher explained about “past progressive”. The media used were:

       1.     Textbook

The black board or white board is the most important visual media which most of the classrooms have. In this case,The teacher used whiteboard to explain to students about past progressive. She wrote about pronoun, formula of past tense and some examples about it.

At the end of the class the teacher asked the students to review all material that have been studied because next week will be the examination for middle semester.

In addition, based on the Interview with the teacher, another media that she often used in the classroom is picture, flashcard, tape recorder to play the audio.

They learned about how to make a good sentence by using grammatical rules such as simple present to create the sentences about daily activity. Before giving the task for the students the teacher gave an explanation about simple present, texts structures ( vocabularies, verbs, adverb of frequency, adverbs of time prepositions)  and then she also provided some examples related to the topic. She gave examples based on students ’ contexts.Instructional methodology used are discussion and teamwork. The method used is Discovery Learning.

Those three pictures below were used as the media foe the students to observe, to monitor and to make and example based on the picture.

Those pictures below were used by the teacher for the students ’task. So the students had to make their own sentences based on those  pictures about “simple present”.

Finally, at the end of the class the teacher did  reflection about the topic that has been studied. She also gave feedback to the teaching learning process and she also informed the students about the examination.
